about the numbers. mitt romney is working to regain ground. barack obama is pouring millions of dollars into ads to steal the deal. voters are heading to the polls in two dozen states and both sides are bracing for the unexpected, especially when it comes to the economy. and that's with less than six weeks left. if the election were held today, what would we expect, jeff? >> if the election would be held today and it is, it is a question that governor romney's campaign dismissed saying it is not being held today. i was in iowa yesterday, thousands of people have voted in almost at the end of this month, 30 states will have voted. if the election was today, president obama has command. in battleground states from nevada, up to new hampshire and down to florida in nine battle ground states, the president is in command of this race and that's not an assessment of the polls, although he has an advantage in the polls but republicans in the romney campaign as well. that doesn't mean this race is over. there are a lot of things can happen. the debate next week. there is a recognition inside th
that obama won last time. romney will win that. everyone is surprised that all of these polls are pretty much saying obama is in command of the lead. chuck talked about they lost august. one reading is that they lost the summer, the romney campaign. if you look at obama did, they did, at the start of this race was in may. that's when they started going out with tough ads and framing romney as someone who wasn't in touch with the middle class and the tax issue, him releasing his tax returns. he was always on the defensive and now he has a lot of ground to make up. gwen: is there an argument to be made that there is a policy shift going on in america's mind as well, not just a good speech or a good piece of positioning, but actually people are looking at their choices differently now? >> there are ways to think of this, not just through polling data but economic data and there is a surge of optimism. small business confidence is up. some financial market participant indexes are up. this would suggest that people are starting to feel better about this recovery. a lot of interesting questions as

extinct. >> neither obama nor romney have public events scheduled for today, but vice president joe biden and paul ryan were both on the trail. the vice president was in florida this morning, ryan is in new hampshire and is traveling to ohio for an event tonight. we will, of course, have more on all of these stories over the next two hours. in case you have not heard, the countdown is on to colorado. even though both campaigns are playing the lowered expectations game, you can bet their furiously preparing for the denver debate. joining me now to talk about it, garrett hake, who has been traveling with the romney campaign. garrett, good saturday afternoon to you. what can you tell me about governor romney's debate preparations this weekend? >> well, craig, i can tell you, so far, it hasn't really started at. at the moment, he's over at his oldest son's house in massachusetts. we are expecting governor romney to participate in some more debate prep this weekend. understand senator rob portman from ohio will be here, he'll also be traveling with the governor to denver on monday. they're at

's where it's really going to resonate. >> david, can the romney camp send in a paul ryan the way obama sends in his vice-president? can he be that effective in the state of florida? >> he's already done that, alex. i wouldn't be surprised to see him again. paul ryan has brought his own mother with him on some of these speaking engagements in florida and elsewhere. they still will. they have an argument of their own that obama took money out of medicare to pass his health care plan. so they're going to keep on that message, not giving up. i will say i did recently talk to some white house officials. they're feeling very confident in florida. his campaign did a big ad buy there because they do see internal numbers breaking their way right now. so i think the romney camp does need to get in there and try to shore it up. >> okay, david, shara, good to see you as always. >>> gary johnson joins me next to talk about his conspiracy theory about the presidential debates. also mitt romney and the middle class. is it too late to make a connection? that's coming up in strategy talks. keep it here

obama's game. i think romney probably needs to go in there with a thought out piece by piece critique of barack obama's economic policies linking him to the weak economy that he has presided over four years. i say that because my sense, paul, there are a substantial number of voters. people lo say i think i'm going to vote for president obama. i don't feel that strongly about it, but i don't think mr. romney has made the case with me. i wish i could hear him out before i make up my mind. this is the opportunity to do that. >> paul: that obama narrative is disaster. don't let mitt romney who is just like george bush brings you back to the disaster and some people are buying that narrative. reluctantly because i think romney has not connected obama's policies to the pain they feel? >> forward looking, the president he would be and let him present to the people what the disaster would be in the second term for obama. what would be the case. he doesn't have to worry nice guy and all this. this is the only one and only chance. there is life after the presidency. he ought not to look back a
diet coke. but that's not looking good either because obama currently leads romney by 10 points in ohio, 9 points in florida and 12 points in pennsylvania which wouldn't be a problem if between now and november 6th we can just get 290 million people to move to arkansas.
